Reduce congestion and improve safety
on Bee Caves Road and residential streets
West Lake Hills residents are negatively impacted on a daily basis by cut-through traffic between Austin and the developments to our west. As Austin's commuter traffic increasingly uses our neighborhood streets, the inconvenience and the risks to residents also rises. Conversely, traffic bottleneck situations, such as those at Redbud Trail and Westlake Drive, pose a different set of problems.
Getting funding for the expansion of Bee Cave Road has been one of this council's biggest accomplishments, as it means the city will have enough money to add a center turn lane and sidewalks to the roadway within the entire city limits, enabling traffic to flow more smoothly and safely. We have hired an engineering firm to help us come up with ways to improve traffic flow through Redbud Trail and Westlake Drive, with the additional goal of reducing cut-through traffic in surrounding neighborhoods.
Speeding through our narrow winding streets is a clear and present danger to our residents. Many have repeatedly asked for increased traffic patrol as a way to combat the problem. To that end, we have hired an additional police officer and purchased a new vehicle solely for that purpose. We have also reduced speed limits on certain streets.
I will continue working on traffic calming measures as well as solutions to route traffic efficiently and safely through our city.
